Need a Deep Cleaning?
A deep teeth cleaning is different from standard professional cleanings. A dentist or hygienist will take the extra step of going below the gumline to remove plaque and hard tartar. This allows gums to be healthier and attach to the tooth properly. A deep teeth cleaning is recommended for those with challenging plaque and tartar problems or who haven’t seen a dentist in a while.
What Happens During Teeth Cleaning
Every practice and hygienist may do things slightly differently depending on each patient’s needs. Generally, the same order is followed.
The hygienist or dentist will use a tool called a scaler or dental pick to remove tartar and plaque from teeth. They will gently scrape them. You will not feel any pain. A scaler allows the hygienist or dentist to remove tartar, which is a hardened calculus. A large amount of tartar may require using an ultrasonic scaler. This is a tool that uses ultrasonic waves to break up the tartar and that makes it easier to remove without a lot of scraping.
The next step is to remove stains and smooth your teeth surfaces. We use a special polisher and paste for that. The paste is slightly thicker for toothpaste. It is applied through the polisher that has a small rubber cup. The cup spins as it applies the slightly abrasive paste.
Our staff will rinse your teeth with a smalljet of water and a suction tube throughout the cleaning process. This removes the plaque and tartar that has been scraped away as well as the polishing paste. We may also use some quick puffs of air to get a better look at a specific tooth. This makes identifying surface irregularities and buildup easier.
The final step is for a hygienist to floss your teeth with standard dental floss. With a nice clean mouth, we can move on into an examination by the dentist. The dentist will look at your teeth, gums, tongue and the inside of your mouth to ensure there is no significant problems.
